The latest trend in this very traditional business is pastel etching, which creates a brilliant display of color and artistry. The images tend to be religious, and again, reflect the guidelines of the cemetery.
Porcelain pictures, which are inlaid in the monument and guaranteed not to fade, are also becoming more popular.
The work can take anywhere from eight to 12 weeks for a simple stone, depending on color and design, and up to 16 to 20 weeks for more elaborate carving. The granite used is available in several different colors and comes from Vermont and Canada.
